What is Chasän Tatày?

Chasàn Tatäy is the largest residential subdivision developed to date by Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and the first to be developed in partnership with the Government of Yukon. It is located on Settlement Land parcel C-15B, just off Range Road in Whitehorse. The neighbourhood will include a mix of different housing types including single-detached homes as well as duplexes and condominiums. There will be a large park and trails in the neighbourhood, as well as access to nearby greenspaces (Chasàn Chùa /McIntyre Creek Territorial Park).

Why is Kwanlin Dün developing their settlement land?

Kwanlin Dün is the largest private landowner in the City of Whitehorse, with 30.38 km2 of land within city limits. Land claim negotiators picked out certain parcels of that land to be used for revenue generation to support government programs and services. This development is the first step towards realizing that vision.

How does Chasän Tatày reflect KDFN values?

The vision for this new neighbourhood, as described through consultation with the KDFN community in 2013-2014 and 2021, was solidified with the publication of the Range Point Master Plan in 2023.
‍
The Southern Tutchone name, Chasàn Tatäy, means Copper Narrows in English. This reflects the history of the area (there are many stories about copper nuggets found in the area) and the nearby narrowing of the Yukon River.

We are gathering ideas from Citizens and Beneficiaries about how KDFN's culture and history can be reflected in common spaces in the neighbourhood, as well as in its branding. We look forward to incorporating the work of KDFN artists wherever possible.
